Starting my Generalist Year, in our Diversity class, we had an assignment and discussion that stuck with me going into my Specialist Year, and will probably stick with my for my entire Social Work Career.

For the assignment, we were instructed to observe different sides of town of a city that we stayed on and compaired different types of access that were provided for people in those specified communities. For the assignment, I compaired surroundaing areas of camouses with NCAT and UNCG-G. Noticing that around a Historically Black College and University (HBCU), NCA&T, there were many Tobacco Shops, Liquor Stores, Corner Stores, and run down gas stations, but around a Predominatly White Institution (PWI), UNC-G, there are multiple high food chain restaurants, drug stores, and better quality restaurants was very interesting.

This opened my perspective about Multicultural Competence when working in the Social Work Field and how small disadvantages are right in our faces. But because it is the “social norm” no one really thinks much of it. Acoording to the NASW Values, our first value is Service. Any and all people no matter what walk of life deserve the same access to quality and high end services.
